- 20 carat gold: 83.3% pure gold (marked 833)
- 18 carat gold: 75% pure gold (marked 750)
- 14 carat gold: 58.5% pure gold (marked 585)
- 9 carat: 37.5% pure gold (marked 375)
- 8 carat: 33.3% pure gold (marked 333)
This purity is enhanced by alloying it with other metals, making the gold durable and wearable.
In the Netherlands, the vast majority of gold jewelry is made of 14 carat gold. Due to the low gold content, 8 and 9 carats may not officially be called gold in the Netherlands, but in countries such as Germany and England, 8 and 9 carats are considered gold. So it is simply a wonderful material to work with!
Gold plated and Gold vermeil
In addition to solid gold, there are also gold plated and gold vermeil jewelry.
But what's the difference?
Gold-plated jewelry has a base of silver or another metal, such as copper, covered with a thin layer of gold, while gold vermeil has a silver base with a thicker layer of gold. Gold vermeil, with its gold coating of at least 2.5 microns thickness, embodies luxury and durability without paying the price of real gold.
